I’ve done hundreds of interviews over the years, but why was this one my toughest to date?
Because John Giuca was my best friend growing up.
We were boys; had each others’ backs.
We did what teenagers in Brooklyn do: played basketball often, and got ourselves into trouble. Of the mischievous, knucklehead variety, which usually occurred after we finished listening to the prankster kings — the Jerky Boys.
Now Giuca is locked up behind bars for a murder that he insists he had nothing to do with, also adding that the Brooklyn DA’s office railroaded him with a terribly unfair trial.
As you’ll see in this Crime Watch Daily exclusive, he has a point:Â Not only is the Brooklyn DA notorious for its corruption, three out of the four principal witnesses against John have recanted their trial testimony. And the only person who hasn’t recanted, not only took a polygraph stating he knows nothing about the murder, but this dude was initially a suspect himself.
Oh, and make sure you watch how John’s mom went undercover to prove her son’s innocence.
It’s so wild that Hollywood is literally turning what she did into movie!
I wish my childhood friend and I were able to reconnect under different circumstances, but that wouldn’t be the case.
PART ONE:
The star witness against John Giuca was a career criminal named John Avitto who testified that Giuca confessed the murder to him while they were in jail together. Avitto has now recanted his testimony and said that he only came forward to the DA to avoid further jail time on a drug violation. Giuca’s defense team now argues that, not only did the Brooklyn DA fail to inform the jury of this deal they made with a career criminal, but they hid the deal from Guica as well.
PART TWO:
Nobody’s worked harder to prove John Giuca’s innocence than his own mother, Doreen, who actually seduced a juror undercover and got him to admit that he knew John from the neighborhood and was prejudiced against him. The juror was allegedly anti-semitic and thought John was Jewish because his last name, phonetically pronounced, sounds like the word “Jew.”
And that type of guy helped in deciding her son’s fate.
What Doreen did is straight out of a movie. Hell, Hollywood is actually looking to turn her story into a motion picture for the big screen.
PART THREE:
Giuca is seeking a new trial — where a jury can hear all the evidence, not just what the prosecutor selectively submits to them. His latest appeal was denied by a Brooklyn judge.
Now Giuca’s case is moving through the appellate system.
