The ten-foot cop, otherwise known was the NYPD’s Mounted Police Unit.
They patrol NYC’s landmark areas, including Times Square and Central Park, and are an important part of the City’s anti-terrorism efforts because they can assess crowds atop their elevated perch.
All in all, the Unit consists of 60 hoofed officers strong.
Fun fact: It began in 1858 as part of a program “to corral runaway carriages and wrangle reckless horseman.”
Here you’ll meet Officer Pamela Bond and Officer Vernon Oehlka, as they give me a tour inside the City’s brand-new Mounted facility, which stretches 26,000 square feet, and take me on patrol in one of the Big Apple’s busiest sections.
