This had to be the most gut-wrenching assignment I’ve ever been on — the search for Kyron Horman, a second-grader in Oregon who went missing more than six years ago and whose disappearance has generated national headlines.
I joined Desiree Young, the boy’s mother, on one of her yearly searches through the vast forests in the Portland area.
As you’ll see, Desiree is consumed by conflicting emotions.
On the one hand, she hopes to find remains of Kyron to bring about a sense of closure. She can organize a proper burial to mourn the loss of her son.
But on the other hand, finding those remains will mean she must confront what she fears most: that Kyron is dead.
In fact, while I was with Desiree’s search part, we came across bones that could’ve been that of a young boy. At that moment, Desiree is whisked away by her friends and family while cadaver dogs are rushed to the scene:
PART ONE:
So what happened to Kyron?
What we know is that he was dropped off at school on the morning of June 4, 2010. But Skyline Elementary marked him absent that day after the boy vanished immediately following a science fair.
As for Desiree, she doesn’t mince words on who is to blame.
She suspects that Kyron succumbed to foul play at the hands of his stepmother Terri Horman, the one who dropped the boy off at school that morning and who is believed to be the last known person to see him alive.
In fact, according to Desiree, Teri has failed not just one, but two polygraph tests administered by law enforcement. Desiree also contends that Terri Horman remains the primary suspect in the ongoing investigation.
And get this: while Horman denies any involvement in Kyron’s disappearance, she allegedly tried to get her name legally changed to a character in a murder mystery novel.
But that’s not all.
