Yep, it’s bizarre, but true.
Meet Curtis Williams, aka, “Wall Street.” Â Not only does he invest in the stock market from behind bars, but he also teaches a financial literacy class to the other inmates.
In fact, he teaches the class with Zak Williams, son of legendary comedian Robin Williams.
“Wall Street” is serving a lengthy sentence at San Quentin State Prison for murder. Zak volunteers his time.
To be honest, it was encouraging to hear how many of these inmates are able to support their families financially from behind bars through their investments, which means that those families are not dependent on the state (taxpayer money) for sustenance. Shoot, someone of these guys are allegedly raking in six-figure earnings from the prison yard. How crazy is that?!
The theme of these classes is one of personal responsibility. “Wall Street” stresses the values of making money legally and living life frugally. “Delayed gratification” is stressed week after week. “Wall Street” says he’s imparting lessons of financial literacy to his fellow prisoners because he wants them to make smart choices after they are released.
And robbing someone over $20 is not a smart choice, he was quick to point out.
Remarkably, “Wall Street” says he entered prison not even knowing how to read. And now the dude studies market data for hours a day with all his free time.
So how exactly do prisoners invest in the stock market?
